Jean-Philippe Piter

French photographer, publisher and art director, Jean-Philippe was born in 1968 in Senegal before moving to France at 16 to study photography. He began his career as a decoration and architecture photographer working for Philippe Starck and Christian Liaigre and then moved to Saint-Barthélemy FWI in 1997. There, he published his magazine PURE ST-BARTH, documenting the unique lifestyle and people of St-Barth which through the years has become the visual reference of the island. His work has since been published in magazines around the world: Photo, GQ, Vanity Fair, Citizen K, W, Vogue UK, Interiors, Numéro, Times magazine…

“Simplicity is the first word that comes to my mind to describe my work. I stick to the essential kit. I work without assistants/team. I always shoot in natural light and never use more than 2 lenses. As a result there are no props in my photographs. They have a simplicity that, paradoxically, is hard to achieve. It has always been passion over reason. Authenticity and simplicity.” - JPP.  A mix of ocean spray mixed and monoi oil, his images compose a light-hearted ode to summer fun; Alternatively refreshing and sensual, Piter’s photos constantly carry the artist’s signature humor.
